FIA compliance
What makes a track FIA compliant?
simply- run off areas, curb hight, color layouts, pavement thickness, and width of track surface. minimum length, or max... speed- is it necessary to put in chicanes...? i was wonder also how much such an investment would be for lots of good tracks that AFAIK are not FIA spec. like Road Atlanta and Road America, is Brands HAtch? how about knockhill and BathHurst? for example |

I suspect there are FIA grades. Silverstone is FIA F1 compliant, Donington will be...
Allegedly. But you find other FIA series running on tracks other than F1 standard. A bit like MSA sign off must have grades, as I very much doubt some UK tracks are safe for the likes of Le Mans cars, like Cadwell or Combe. Yet they happily hold meetings for 'lesser' series. |

FIA track grades
edit, beaten to it
FIA track grades http://www.fia.com/sport/regulations...article06.html 1 F1 1T F1 testing 2 F3000, CART, IRL, F/Nippon, Euro 3000, Open Telefonica V6,<snip> etc what defines FIA track http://www.fia.com/sport/regulations...article07.html and finally, the safety measures http://www.fia.com/sport/regulations...article08.html the bit you want is the pdf at the bottom of the page linked to from above Appendix O http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.nsf/9BA5B952AF67D4ABC12575EE003C2609/$FILE/Annexe%20O_2009_09.07.09.pdf Last edited by Bodysnatcher; 18 Aug 2009 at 12:38. Brands hatch is Grade 2 (i.e. everything but F1 cars). I can't see it ever hosting F1 again simply because there's not really enough space for all the teams "motorhomes" in the paddock.

IIRC what one of the circuit commentators said about Knockhill, it has "International Grade 3" status.
The lists in the top link provided by Bodysnatcher would support that with British GT (GT3/GT4) and BTCC though most if it's events would be covered by Grade 4. |

Between 1996 and 2000 there was talk of building a huge GP complex in the middle of the GP loop..this never happened as planning consent for the upgrades was never given. If only it had happened!

Yep, saw the plans for that.
Apart from putting the pits on the infield there was the ability to have 2 distinct circuits by looping back off the existing GP circuit behind the current med centre. But I think associated changes would have made Brands look a very different place. |

Given the amount of woodland that would need to be chopped down and the proximity to a residential area, the chances of that actually happening were somewhere between slim and non-existent.

Would have totally wrecked the circuit in my opinion. back to the thread, fia compliance is mostly to do with run offs, barriers and other things defined in the international sporting code such as track length. However there is more then FIA standards to meet the standard of many major events, for example F1 needs massive hospitality units, media centres and motorhome parking. Other championships such as DTM require live snatch bays and hugh debries fenceing encloseing the entire circuit. |
