lap timers

Am considering purchasing an Alfano Fun V2 timer which is supposed to get its signal from a magnetic strip embedded in the track at most circuits.

Question: has anyone got one and are they any good?

Not got one or seen one, but the majority seem to use Rollcentre ones - they work off beacons which are at almost every track (you can put your own beacon out at Lydden...). And it's half/third of the price.

I bought a secondhand rollcentre/demon tweeks one off ebay,c/w beacon.

Works fine. The only glitch has been a dodgy "off" button which i sorted with a squirt of WD40.

Thread resurection,,,,

As technology seems to have moved on since the last time this thread was posted on,
Is the rollcentre [either 100 or 200],lap timer still the one to use.
Im just looking into getting a lap timer and just wanted some advice from those that use the kit.
Cheers.

Aim Solo is worth looking at. Uses GPS, so no beacon needed, just select track from list or enter GPS co-ordinates of start line.

I think it will display a lap time Delta, so you know on your current lap whether you are on a hot lap or not.

I ended up with a Demon Tweeks T100 which is ok when it works, but i have had a lot of trial and error trying to get the sensor in the right position. Also it doesnt display very well at all in the cold.

I've used the DT100 version for a few years.

At each circuit, I make sure that the sensor is pointing at the pit wall and it seems very reliable / accurate.

At Spa I picked up two beacons, possibly there are beacons on the F1 pits and the "Sports Car" pits. That confused it, but not as much as learning Spa confused me!

They do seem to go through batteries quite quickly, so I always have a spare handy and often put a new one in for each race.

I bought one of these last year, for historic FF testing (we are not allowed in race or quail).

Display is very good and clear, it does give a predicted lap time and when downloaded gives lots of charts with sqwiggles on them that show accel, braking and other sqwiggly things against a track map!!

It does draw its own circuit map using gps, which is good - and you can set your own splits using the software

Having never previously used an onboard lap timer, i did find it quite distracting and it led to me chasing lap times in a scruffy manner rather than focussing on improving the lap section by section.
