Rockingham Stages 4 & 5 Dec

Anyone else heading off to the Rock for this, either marshalling or as a spectator/hospitality person?

I'm there on Sunday. Weather looking cold (no, really!) and possibly icy which could mean we're all very busy...

Doing Saturday, my first time doing anything remotely rally-ish. Anyone know if the diner is likely to be open for brekkie on Saturday morning?

The burger van was open when we rocked up last year at 10am, so had a very welcome tea & bacon butty. Not to say it will be this year though, if the proprietor has any sense at all he'll be home in bed!

I'll ping a message to Cat Lund (Ops Manager) and see what she says.

If only I'd known about this beforehand, I've have probably sorted everything out so I could do this, starting to get withdrawal symptoms

It'll be nice to sit in the hospitality suite and watch other people working for a change. Must stay clear of the pit office and not go inside the track

Also spectating, probably Saturday.

If anyone isn't aware Rockingham sent out free VIP passes for this weekend as a thank you for marshalling there this season (6 days or more, I think). So a big thank you to the management at the Rock for doing this!

Yes, but that's entirely different from getting out of your road for marshalling. In my experience the car knows how much you want to be succesful and behaves accordingly!

Just got an email from Robert Brook, CoC for this event, just in case anyone else didn't get it:

Quote:
Dear all,

I am writing to you to get your input.

At this moment in time we are concerned with running the event due to the current and forecasted weather. I am concerned with 2 things that apply to you:

1 - I am concerned that you (Our marshals) won't be able to get to and from the venue. Can I ask you give me an idea at this time if you feel you will be able to make it to the event.

2 - I am very concerned about the risk of hyperthermia. Our weather experts are saying we could have temperatures of -4, but the wind chill factor could drop this to feel like -16! If we start having these conditions we need you to be prepared. This means we will need to rotate people into the warmth (Probably of their cars) and we need people to come equipped with hats, gloves, scarfs, etc. Again, can I get feedback you're happy with this.

<snip>
As it stands, having had some sodding viral lurgy since Sunday, I may well not be physically fit to go. It's all a bit touch-and-go though.

Struck me tonight that I could probably get away with wearing the thermals I wear under my dry suit when diving in this chilly country's surrounding seas. I would, I guarantee, be toasty

I'm just planning to wear a million and one layers, maybe 2 or 3 isn't enough this time I've been coughing and sneezing (well, more than usual) but I should be OK.

Cheers for the forward greem, I got it direct from Rob anyway!

I did an RAC rally way back when it was hovering around -12. I wore so many layers I was unable to bend sufficiently to re-tie my bootlace. However, I can confirm that there's no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes. I was perfectly warm, some of my colleagues less so.

Good of the organisers to think about it and send out the e-mail. Top marks to them. Wish I was able to attend. What a silly time of year for someone to arrange a wedding.

I'll be there on Saturday, taking advantage of the VIP passes and the warmth of the hospitality suite. Thank you Rockingham.

Having done this one 3 times before, you might find that you can take your car to your post eg at the tunnel entrance, or on the oval at the end of the pit lane/turn 1, and keep warm between sessions. There maybe others, but these are 2 I know of, from past experience.

As for the weather in Corby today, snow fell late morning, sun is shining as I type. The main roads are fine but the temperature is -1C. Enjoy yourselves, it's a good experience, especially when it gets dark and the cars have their lights on.

Hooray! Rockingham say "Rockingham Stages is GOOOOO!"

My doctor, however, she say "no go for you, sir". Have fun, all.

Seems fitting that I missed the first planned meeting of the season, at Rockingham, while marooned in Oz, and now the last. Maybe I'll do the Plum Pudding instead!

It takes more than a slight chill to keep rally spectators away! With all the facilities at Rockingham & the chance to duck inside, I'd be surprised if they turned spectators away. There's no mention on the event website.
