WRC Rally Sweden - Round 1 - 10th/13th February
The 2011 season of the WRC starts today! It's Ford vs Citroën, speeding across the snow! Last year Mikko Hirvonen won the rally, but with two Sebs, Petter Solberg and Kimi Räikkönen, can Citroën take down the army of Fords in this brave new world of pocket rockets?
*** Website WRC Entry List National Entry List Timetable *** Blame Ken Block for getting me interested in Rallying again. |

The entry list is looking quite healthy - Msport have certainly been busy building all those Fiestas! With new cars all round it'll be interesting to see peoples relative performance, at this stage there won't be a huge difference between the works and non-works cars so it should be more about the drivers.

Top ten so far (ss5):
1) Ostberg 2) Hirvonen 3) P Solberg 4) H Solberg 5) Latvala 6) Ogier 7) Sandell 8) Brynildsen 9) Loeb 10)Raikkonen The Fiestas look to be flying at the moment but still a bit of a shock to see Ostberg leading. Ken Block is 18th, PG Andersson has been quick but dropped time with a roll on ss2. |

Good re the Fiestas, any reason Loeb is a little further down? [Only looked at positions here, not times].

I think Loeb was/is running first on the road and there's some loose snow to shift off the surface so he's got a bit less grip than some of the later drivers.

wrc.com was actually experiencing technical problems due to the sheer amount of people visiting today. Surely thats a good sign?

Personally after tuning out for a few years I'm back into the WRC big style.

I love the new cars, like the idea how things are being turned upside down, and Ken Block giving us insights into how things run while being quite exicted about it brings the fan closer into the sport. |

After missing coverage of ANY kind for the WRC, I have just subscribed to HD Theater, and I am excited about following perhaps my favorite form of motor racing throughout the year. Unfortunately, it looks like I'll be following it 2 weeks in the rears.

www.wrc.com always update their site with highlights of each day and onboards. The best way to keep up to date without having any available tv coverage. (I have neither ESPN or Motors)

The looks are great, it was only after watching a recent show I realised wheel arch width was not limited, the cars simply have a maximum overall width.
The combination of smaller cars and a width increase from 1800 to 1820mm gives the cars monster arches. |

Four guys up for the win going into the last day? I think I picked a good first rally to watch. Really liking the WRC live radio on their website. I also found this channel on youtube...
http://www.youtube.com/user/JMLatvalaFan I now know not to subscribe to ESPN I just can't stand highlights shows that are commentated like it is being watched live... when it obviously isn't |

I dont have Motors or ESPN so using WRC.com for coverage. Will ITV4 or Dave (or any free) be showing any highlights this year?
Glad Hirvonen is doing the business, game on 2011 |

The new cars look great but shame we dont get to see them much on the TV coverage. Most of it is in car where all you see is the dash, the back of 2 silouetted driver helmets and seats and a tiny letterbox view through the windscreen with which you can see nothing, if not that view then its the equally pointless one pointing at the drivers face. I know rallys are hard to cover but the IRC seem to do a better job with it.

The ESPN commentary is somewhat annoying, yes I am lucky to be able to watch it but it sounds as if they are commentating from a toilet or something...just a weird echo.

Erms I don't wish to spoil things for people who aren't watching live, but why have a driver and co-driver swapped roles....?!

Apparently the change of roles is because Petter has had his driving license taken from him by Swedish police... I'll use his name now as someone else has!

What a place and way to make a debut - live on telly, on snow, in a DS3 WRC. |

If it was Solberg I would be; "What the hell is this?", but seeing it's Chris Patterson driving, one his first ever drive, I'm impressed. Yes, at this level it's slow, but he did keep the car on track, on snow and at some speed, which isn't easy, so I can't fault him on anything.
Hopefully Solberg can return next rally after that... hiccup. Meanwhile, I'm hoping Block can take things up a gear. He has the experience from Rally Mexico last year, so doesn't have to play it safe like this round. Top 10? Last edited by I Rosputnik; 13 Feb 2011 at 21:30. |

so the final results:
1) Hirvonen 2) Ostberg 3) Latvala 4) Ogier 5) P Solberg (+ Patterson ) 6) Loeb 7) Andersson 8) Raikkonen 9) Wilson 10) Al Qassimi 14) Block It's a good start to the championship - plenty of action throughout the 3 days (I managed to catch some of it online - no ESPN for me). The new generation of cars looks ok too - I was worried that they wouldn't look as good as the 'old' cars but the Fiesta in particular looks pretty good. Also I'd agree that Block needs to find some more pace - he should be up there with Wilson and Raikkonen really. |
