Tyre Bundles
with this revelation coming out of Nerang, we may finally see a light at the end of the tunnel on the idiotic practice of placing tyre bundles at apex's, and thus allowing the entertai err *** Cough*** Safety car onto the track to bunch the fields up every 3rd lap.
http://www.speedcafe.com.au/2011/02/...-tyre-bundles/ However, at Homebush Mr Addison was harping on about an electronic system that could detect cars jumping kerbs in use in some other motor racing series elsewhere on this planet, allowing Race Control to enforce a drive through when necessary. However given that V8's is the, ahem, only series in the world, allegedly, this maybe why Mr Perry hasn't heard of it. Anyone aware of such a system? |

Proper kerbs? Stingers? Something produces and instant but hopefully not race-ending penalty and doesn't require a decision by the marshals and race control. If you run wide, it should slow you down so you lose a place or time or lets the following car past. Mistakes (or on modern tarmac run-offs, 'can't be bothered to get it right') should be punished, but your race doesn't have to be destroyed.

My thoughts exactly...
This is an age old problem. Drivers want to go as fast as possible and will use whatever they can to do it. They have always cut corners, even in 'the old bays' when there was dirt on the infield. The last round was a perfect example in that there was still asphalt and grip on the outfield and the drivers used it. If you watch events that have concrete they dont drive into it on purpose because of the consequenses. Give them consequenses and keep the officials out of it. |

The way I see it, the tyre bundles are outside of the racetrack. You hit them, you're in the wrong, easy. Go directly to pitlane, Do not pass go, do not collect $200.
But, seeing as they do make an impact on the race when they are dragged onto the track, how about replacing the curbing with the same stuff we have on the streets, 90 degree angle and all. The racetrack should be between the white lines, not the white line, curbing, and the asphalt right up to the wall. |

I am all for something solid in the way such as a wall, to stop the practice. Just not tyre walls. |

I think they should put big pools of super glue on the other side of the curbs. You go over the curb to much, you get stuck.

Whar happened at Abu Dhabi was a joke. And to get officials in the mix leaves it open to whinging. There are ways of discouraging drivers from using more than the track without spoiling permanant tracks. But there has to be a penalty, concrete walls will do it but could block the track, ripple strips will do it if designed properly (BIG). But lets stick with racing and not 'officialling' to determine the results.

wouldnt just some consistent penalising fix the issue,
it seems pretty clear, you hit the tyre bundle or its equivalent and you get penalised. the drivers would learn quickly, do it post qualifying and take the time of anyone who hits them, use a basic camera to record, its not hard |

One of the reasons Turn 8 at Clipsal is like it is is that year 1 it had a nice wide run off on the exit and the drivers used the run off as normal race line (RC ignored repeated calls by marshals and actually told them to stop calling them in) so now we've got the wall nice and close and we've all seen the result haven't we.

I recall that the north loop at Oran Park had some nice kerbs that tended to keep the cars within the racetrack, at least on the inside. 45 odd degree angles at a height of around 90-100 millimetres.
Certainly stopped me cutting the corner in a kart..... |

Short-cutting would be out of control. It would mean that we’d have to be a judge of fact at every corner, and we’d have so much traffic before the stewards, trying to sort it out. It wouldn’t be practical,” Perry said.
Interesting. A Judge of Fact on every corner? Perhaps a Sector Marshal could do that....and why would it need to go before the stewards? Can't the race director issue a pit lane penalty? |

Not only that, but what can a steward do about a decision that a Judge of Fact has made?

I agree with mostly everyone here. The drivers need to be held accountable for abusing the race track. Surely the white lines either side of the track are painted there for a reason. It is there to indicate the edge of the racetrack. What the V8 drivers did to the Abu Dhabi circuit was a disgrace.
I am all for the 'barrier' type kerbing as the deterrent, but at the back of a conventional sloped kerb (about say 300mm behind). If the drivers complain, then the sloped kerb is the edge of the track. |
