Al Holbert
How under rated was this driver - at least to Europeans?
Derek Bell rated him highly. Anybody would like share memories? |

Bringing this thread up, given today is the 30th anniversary of the loss of Al in a private plane crash.
Al Holbert was a huge talent, trained engineer and worked for Penske before Derek Bell rating him highly is really the best endorsement possible. |

To answer the original question: I was too young to really have known him. And of course, back then if there was any racing you could follow in the (local) media, it was only F1.
If back then internet (and streaming etc...) would have been available like it is now, I think he would have been much better known and appreciated. In my case it is not underrated, but unknown. |

I remember Derek Bell saying he was a great endurance driver and a really nice guy too. Just a shame it ended tragically
