Why don't we see this anymore?

Found one of my all time great boyhood memories of F1. <sniff> Why can't it be like this anymore?

why dont we have this anymore??? because well most drivers these days are gutless, and there isnt enough drag and enough mech grip until there is that will be consigned to the history books!!!

Dijon '79 I dont even have to watch as an mpeg, I have the whole battle burned in my head from the first to the last second...lol.
May I remember you Piquet against Senna? I am not sure about it, you must help me now. I think it was on the Hungaroring in '87? Anyway, remembering Piquet sliding around the corner overtaking on the outside of the first corner was gigantic!

Best regards,

Julian

Lol, yeah, actually I have the impression that also today young drivers that have to be overlapped can be very polite and quick in doing it. You remember Mazzacane's first races where he was so terrified of the idea of blocking a champ that he even drove on the grass just to be kind and polite...

One of the rare F1 races that was shown in the States in the '70's.

Maybe it wasn't such a bad thing that my girlfriend of three years had just dumped me and I had nothing to do that afternoon. I will never forget those final laps.

Pity drivers such as Gilles and Arnoux (plus Peterson, Hunt, Regga et al) no longer exist. So therefore battles like that, clean but aggressive, can no longer happen.

Plus todays cars just plain suck.

Fine. Take that one with Gilles and Mario Andretti at Zolder. Or Piquet and Gilles in Rio. Reutemann and Gilles chase, I don't know where... Gilles missed the corner and had to take a shorcut zig zagging the plastic piles, Reutemann was so close that follow him !!!

It was never the "norm", it was merely possible. Today, we could never get it.

Now you know what Liz means when she says drivers back then were men in tempermental machines, not boys in radio controlled cars.

Yes in fact it never was the norm. Also nowadays we sometimes see exciting maneuvers, but really rarely. Think of Monaco 98 with the famous TGF vs Wurz battle through Loews and Portier, it was as exciting as the stuff on the video, just didnt last for long...lol.
But as said...unfortunately exciting moves are rare...

Best regards,

Julian
