Insurance Confussion

Hi I have completed my 1st year of marshalling and have just received my new MSA licence and sent of my renewal forms for the Marshalls club.
Do I have to renew my insurance with the MSA and if so how much I remember paying the MSA last year however for 2014 did not have to pay anything. Also am I insured if not do I need to be insured. Would be grateful for any information regarding this

You don't need to pay the MSA or anybody else for insurance cover while marshalling. You are automatically covered by MSA insurance when you sign on for an event. The BMMC insurance scheme offers extra benefits at no extra cost to members.

I can't think of anything a marshal would have to pay MSA?

There is nothing stopping you buying your own personal injury insurance policy.

MSA Personal Accident insurance is provided for all marshals and officials who sign on at events covered by MSA Permit or Certificate of Exemption. It offers up to £65,000 for death or very serious injury and up to £350 per week for up to 104 weeks for temporary total disablement arising from injury sustained at the event or during direct travel to and from the event. Various other benefits and restrictions apply. (See Blue Book, Appendix 2)

The BMMC Personal Accident insurance provides very similar benefits (£65,000/up to £350 p.w. for up to 104 wks) for fully paid-up BMMC members officiating at non-MSA Permitted events, including overseas (with certain countries - e.g. Chad, etc - excluded). This is included in the annual subscription - still a very reasonable £20 per annum. (See www.marshals.co.uk)

For a small individual premium, BMMC members can be covered for up to £50,000 in repatriation costs; repatriation expenses arising from motorsport incidents may not be covered under standard holiday insurance policies.

Marshals signed on at MSA events are covered against Public Liability under the MSA PL policy - up to £60M. BMMC holds a top-up PL policy for members, in the unlikely event that any incident would not be covered under the MSA policy. (Again, this is part of the annual subscription.)

Hope this helps - but it is still better to play safe!

I always thought that BMMC offered additional insurance cover at MSA events, but this appears to not be the case. Could anyone confirm what the extra premium is??

Additional to what?

George Copeland has listed the cover provided fir MSA and overseas events. This is all included in your bmmc membership fee.

For I think £10 you can get the repatriation cover - which seems a no brainer if you're going to marshal overseas.

Thanks for that link, appreciated. Always thought there was additional cover, although it's obviously recently changed..

Pleased to announce that BMMC Personal Accident insurance policies, plus Repatriation Insurance have all been renewed for 2014. Pretty well the same cover as per note on www.marshals.co.uk but I will update exact cover once the documentation reaches me early in the new year.

I wish you and yours all you would wish yourselves for the New Year.
