Colin Francis
Colin started rallying in 1960 thinking he was a good driver but soon realized he was better off navigating when he had an accident on an Economy Run!
Over the course of his navigating career Colin navigated for about 130 different drivers, of various nationalities, in rallies all over the world. For the 1977 Welsh International, Pentti Airikkala took Colin as his co-driver, in the DTV Chevette, as Colin was a renowned expert of the Epynt ranges. Colin would continue to co-drive for Pentti, who described Colin as the best he worked with. This resulted in Colin managing the DTV rally team after he had to stand down from co-driving in stage rallies. During his career Colin navigated drivers to more than 50 victories, from major International rallies to club events and, from 1990, in many historic rallies. In 2005 Colin won the FIA Trophy for Historic Regularity Rallies for navigators. Colin served on FIA Historic Rallies Commission and FIVA’s Events Commission, and served as the FIA steward on many international historic rallies. Among his many accomplishments was to organise an event in 1981 which helped to start the modern era of Historic rallying. |
