Tyrrell p34 six wheels ?
Hi everybody,
I have a question for you guys. Why did the Tyrrell P 34 six-wheeler in 1976 have yellow lines on each side and it's numbers painted in yellow? |

The pics are of cars from different years. The top shot is one of the later cars with the white engine cowling / cockpit area and sponsorship from a bank or something.
The first cars had the yellow stripes. Don't know why, maybe for the numbers to stand out from the elf logos. |

Now the obvious thing to do is pop along to the next TGP meeting and ask Martin Stretton as he now races the six wheeler!

Thanks a lot guys but I finally found the answer:
The yellow on the car was there because of the possible implication with Renault. But the motor deal fell short and the traditionnal colors were back in 1977 because of the sponsoring of First Nationnal City Bank. |

So were Tyrrell thinking of dumping the Ford DFV engine for a Renault powerplant, or were Renault trying to buy their way into F1 then?

Renault offered ken Tyrrell their turbo motor for free because of Ken's connection with French sponsor Elf.Ken asked advice to Keith Duckworth of Cosworth who prepared Tyrrell's motors and Duckworth said that a 1.5L turbo powered engine would never beat a 3L non aspirated engine. So Ken listened to his friend and Renault put up their own team who started in 1977.The rest is history.Ten years later, Ken had to beg and pay a lot of money to get Renault's turbo motor as he was the last one to do so.
