Knowledge quiz
I need to draw on the collective brains trust out there for some information.
When were centrelock wheels first introduced to the V8's and by who? (I was thinking around '97 or '98 by HRT) Any further info would be appreciated. |

I'm pretty sure they were using centrelock wheels in 1993 when the V8 Supercar series begun, and even a while before then for some cars.

Seton definitely had centrelock wheels on the Falcon in 1993. The Sierra's ran them before that (remember Brock's Sierra at Bathurst two years running with a sticking right rear nut!).

I now remember the Sierra's having centrelocks
It's a bit quiet in here today, I think RT and the rest of them must have stayed up all night watching the F1, bikes and Indy. I went to bed after the bikes so I could be at work this morning. Oh how I wish I was still self-employed! |

Definately pre-1993 in Touring Cars. I'd say that when Godzilla came out in 1990, it would have had centrelocks... but back in those days, the driver chages, brake pad changes, everything took an eternity, so not everyone had them. Something worth looking into...
BTW- since I was so knackered after the weekend out at QR, i nodded off at about nine, taped the 500 (watched last 10 laps at 6am) and watched the Sueperbike/F1 results on the 9 news |

Thanks Crash, if you think of anything else please let me know.
What was on at QR? I too taped the 500, hopefully I'll watch most of it this arvo. Plenty of conjecture in the Indy forums about the finish! |

PEPSI- State Championship meeting- see Improved Production race for some details on their race.
Then there were the Sports Sedans- fantastic racing, a heap of spins, and a car nearly buring to the ground (12 fire extinguihers worth to be put out!). The racing cars- the leader spun, and two Formula Fords crashed.... on the warm up lap! Tony Quinn being chased down by the tiny Sports 1300 of John Campbell. Lots of niggle and action in the Formula Vees, ditto HQs, Geminis etc... fantastic stuff |

Also, having a look through some old mags, I think centre lock wheel nuts may have come in with Grp A in 1985.

Hehe - think you should have most of the Indy media releases by now - just have to wait for the protest hearings to happen and then see another barrage
Centrelocks - Not sure exactly BUT I have on my desk, Bill Tuckeys 1986/87 James Hardie 1000 book and John French and Alf Grant have a picture on page 155 clearly showing a Commodore with single centre nuts as does a double page pic of the Bailey/Grice Chickadee Commodore. Now, wether these can be calssified as 'centrelock' nuts - not sure... |

1985 and Group A is correct. Many teams did not go for them though. Some because of cost and others like Larry reckoned the risks were not worth it and the old wheelnuts could be zipped up faster anyway.

Having a look back at 85 now, it seems the Bimmers, the Volvos and the Mustang had them, but not one of the Commodores. Can't quite remember about the Datsuns, umm errrm the Nissans.

On the commentary of the 1985 Castrol 500, Moffat said that he preferred the 5 wheel nut system to the centre lock one, and how he applauded Holden's decision to not run them.
Not to be too harsh, but some of you lot need to be taught how to keep ur eye's open, i only had 4 hours sunday morning, then 1.5hrs between the end of the Indy 500 and start of the World 600 Nascar race monday morning, really feeling the effects now, i better take a pillow to uni tomorrow. In Group A, I'm pretty sure that the first VL Commodore to run centrelock wheels was the Harvey/Bartlett Bob Forbes-entered Commodore VL at Bathurst in 1988. As Larry Perkins developed the new TWR VL, most of them had the 5 stud wheels, but Larry also developed centrelock hubs. IIRC, the Harvey/Bartlett car was carrying the first set.
Incidentally, Larry persisted in using 5 stud wheels a lot longer than everyone else. In fact, I think he would have been the only one to persist with the 5 stud wheels into the V8 Supercar era. When did he stop using them? On the VT? |

As a Larry hand me down, I believe our car (orig VT now VX) has always run 5 studs.
The only reason we have persisted so long is that the cost to change over (approx $45,000) is money that is better spent on more pressing issues like developing the car. Now the car is better sorted the time lost (approx 8 seconds per tyre stop) becomes of greater issue than the slower lap times by the car. |

William - as I mentioned above, there are numerous photo's in the Bill Tuckey Bathurst book for 1986/87 showing Commodores with centrelock nuts.

Also, I'm certain that you'd find a lot of cars in the Konica Series still use the 5 studded variety.

BMW's were certainly using them - I was only trying to find them on Falcons and Commodores though - remember the BMW's were in reality European cars
