A real Osella

I always thought that it was difficult for an F1 chassis to sell for less than £40,000, which is probably still silly money.
How heartening then to see in Auto Italia an Osella FA1, no less, auctioned for £9200!

I remeber when I tried to convince 10-10ths-ers to "buy a Minardi". Seriously, there was one for sale in the back of Autosport or something. And look what happened there....

SO!!! I AM HIJACKING THIS THREAD (kind of. I hope you don't mind, Oz, but this is for the good of the forum).

Think about it. Have some vision. We could keep it at some random race track and we could all go and have a go as and whe we wish. We could all sign subscriptions to fund the running costs and I'm SURE they'll be volunteers here who will undertake the maintenance required. I mean, it's a real life F1 car!!

ALL 10-10ths FOLK!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, CHIP IN £20!!! WE SHALL, TOGETHER, BUY A REAL F1 CAR!!!

Oz, you got any more info?? If so, post it please....

I remember last year , me and a good mate of mine was trying to convince are wifes to let us re-mortage our houses so we could between us buy Sarah Kavanah's Jordan J193 . Needless to say that the plan never came off .

Damm good idea though Tristan , maybe this way will be more sucessful.

Come on. Even a £10 donation would do. I mean, TEN QUID FOR AN F1 CAR!!! Hang on, can some one help me?? Right, get the total number of REGULAR POSTERS on 10-10ths, and divide £9200 into that. Then we could REALLY see how much we'd need.

Ok first - its gone right? thats why it said it was auctioned??? secondly whats Auto Italia?? thirdly a FA1 is the first F1 car that Cheever drove - was'nt that a pretty unsafe car?? would you want to drive it fast? Personally I'd like an FA1L OR FA1F pls!!

Auto Italia is a magazine, basically they say nice things about Fiats, no matter what sort, which I happen to enjoy

I'm assuming the car was sold... it's just a caption under a tiny photo that I'm quoting. But I'll put in £20 if its still available... I believe it was auctioned in the UK, I'll try and check.

An FA1 (assuming the magazine has got it right) is the first sort of F1 Osella (they were distinguished by letters, a la Chrysler 300, and yes they did make an FA1L!)

It can't have been that unsafe, if it's still in one piece ( its not the type that Ricardo Paletti, bless him, perished in though presumably it's a close relative )

As an impressionable prepubescent, this was the first F1 car I had on my wall, from the poster given away in Autosport's British Grand Prix preview 21 years ago! The remarks about the team in the form guide alluded to the car not being as bad as was originally feared and it was definitely better than a Shadow!!!

Was the FA1L their 1988 car whcih Larini drove? It lived up to its name, although all Osellas failed really. Obviously either the founder had no grasp of English, or jsut didn't think the team would last so long as to reach the L

Osella are still in business making racing cars which is an improvement on some of the other minnows that have come and gone... they make a sort of sports-prototype with BMW M3 power (I believe)which cleans up in the Italian hillclimb championship... they obviously set their sights a little lower nowadays!

I think it was still pretty unsafe, especially when you look at the remains of Miguel Angel Guerras car from Imola 81 (basically the same car but "updated and strengthened"), he had a fairly low speed shunt with one of the Italians or Salazar I think.. The great Enzo Osella still remains my favourite F1 constructor though....

Italian F1 cars of this era were certainly pretty fat, think of the Ferrari 312T4 (I think) and the Alfa.
Osella was obviously just copying them (though he wasn't running flat-12 motors like they were so he had no real excuse!)

Mmmmm.... spuff my pants it looks GORGEOUS. I mean seriously, just imagine hiring out... I dunno... how much would it cost to hire Snetterton or something?? Anyway, just imagine hiring a circuit out and having THAT in the pit lane!! AND THEN DRIVING OFF IN IT!! Mental. I mean, keeping it running would be fantastic for some grease-covered mechanic type (like I said, IT'S AN F1 CAR!!) and we could all have a go, whenever we liked!!

So I've set myself a new target. I'm off to find THREE F1 cars for sale, I'm gonna post them up in here and we can all decide which one we prefer to bid for. You can chip in as much as you like, any currency. I guess the more you bid, the greater the chance that you'll be at the front of the queue when we wheel this thing out.
