ETCC on Eurosport
Will someone please tell Martin Haven to drop the self opinionated drivel and just concentrate on telling us what is happening during the race. It would also be nice if he would curb some of his wild speculation – he hasn’t a clue what is going on inside the cars, so his flights of fantasy really do get tedious! I also find his pro BMW (or should I say anti Alfa) views exceedingly irritating.
He really surpassed himself today with his diatribe on Alfa’s “whinging” – which is rich coming from someone who is always whinging about his director! Of course Alfa are annoyed! They have spent all winter and an awful lot of money developing a winning car and just because the FIA’s favourite touring car manufacturer - BMW - has done a poor job, Alfa get penalised! Can I remind Mr Haven that its not just Alfa who feel hard done by. Volvo have been as vociferous in their complaints – quite rightly too because they weren’t as fast as the BMW’s! |

Well i think ur a bit biased to Alfa!
Martin Haven just has a different style and its a good one. I wouldnt like all commentating to be like that but he says what he and a lot of others are thinkin many commentators try to sit on the fence which can be boring. He and Leslie work well together. You shouldnt pick on people just coz Alfa are being beaten *says to self* i'm gonna get moaned at for sayin that. |

No that is not the reason. I have had posts extensively edited before due to my anti-BMW! opinions. They are cheats. They get the rules changed to soot them. They can't stand being beat. Stay away from the BTCC is all I have to say.

Alfa Fan, i beleive your views are slightly misconstrued, I think the changes made to the technical regulations have been positive, and has produced a more level playing field. I agree 100% with Mr Haven's comments that Alfa were whining as they no longer win by 30+ seconds, now only win by the skin of their teeth, - they are still winning!!
Touring car racing should be close, and have as much of a level playing field as possible. I am an Alfa and BMW fan, I love both marques, so i'm on the fence, i'd just like to see good racing, and i'm preying Alfa and BMW consider coming to the BTCC. |

I think Haven is a good commentator, there are plenty of bad ones out there! The races from Spa were probably the best all season, proving the new regulations have succeded in closing everyone up. For anyone who missed the races, they were both amazing races. Race 1 had Larini battling with Jorg and Ekblom all race while race 2 had Givonardi, Jorg and Rydell going at at, even better than in race 1, with the BMW passing the Alfa along the Kemmel straight! It could have been different had Givonardi not broken down. Great racing!

Here here pink!! Martin Haven is one of the best commentators out there, second only to Martin Brundle!!
Speaking of bad commentators just look at the inane James Allen.... There's a commentator who could make armageddon dull. Put Martin Haven, David Leslie to gether and you have an inspired pairing.... one with absolute and utter enthusiasm offset by the other's years of experience and level headedness... |

If you want poor quality commentry you go to motors tv. I know they have to draft some english speaking guy in for foreign stuff but the american dtm guy. Thats bad. OTOH it grows on you, which is bad.

I thought Martins comments were factual and true. He seemed to know the reasons why the cars were so close and what was happening. OK Ben Edwards is great but Martin is a good alternate.

There are only a few good commentators out there. Keith and Julian, who did WSBK for Skysports were good, Murray and Martin of course, Ben Edwards, Watty and Kox and Haven are the only really good ones. Some of the drivers who do commentating provide some useful insites, everyone else is ......****!

I think Motors TV have hired Martin Haven as I'm sure I've heard his voice on that channel!

Martin Haven and Carlton Kirby are bothy freelance.
Given that both Eurosport and MotorsTV are based in Paris, it is not surprising that they are both using the same commentators (there must be a shortage of English-speaking motorsport commentators there...in fact Carlton Kirby is probably the only one) |

Carlton Kirby is ok. There isn't a commentator that gets on my nerves. The DTM guy is good, knows his stuff.

the only commentators i dislike are ppl on eurosport or something who normally commentate on......i dunno......Figure Skating or Diving who then get put on a motorsport programme and don't have a clue. They can ruin a good race!

Toby Moody's got to be the most enthusiastic guy around (well, after Murray!), and knowledgable too. Shows he's not just after money and fame as he does the best British Hillclimb website (top12runoff.co.uk) too... Despite all the waiting around he and the other guy make it easy to sit through the gaps between Moto GP races.
Martin Haven's good & enthusiastic (but will he please stop calling Formula Nippon "Formula NiSSAN" on Eurosport's Series programme!!) I though it was impressive the way he got into the Bobsleigh coverage too, not afraid to admit when he doesn't know something unlike some others who try and cover it up. Ben Edwards with Jeremy Shaw were a great pairing in CART, as was Ben with John Watson when Eurosport had F1. Carlton Kirby just strikes me as uninterested and uninformed I'm afraid. There are far worse examples around though. And James Allen I find patronising ("you know the drill, folks" or whatever) and seems to be obsessed & satisfied with pit strategy being the main thing in modern F1. Sorry, but not all of us find it as exciting as you. At least Martin's still there to compensate. As for some of those on Motors Tv, like the guy with the weird American English (no idlewild reference intended...) accent, are just beyond a joke. Quite frankly i'd rather just hear the engines and figure out what's going on myself. anyway, rant over! Last edited by jondownunder; 15 Aug 2002 at 17:48. |
