Team member Salary/budgets/money again?
The budgets of F1 have been constantly thrown around. Basically millions of dollars are being thrown around, but how does the expense break down? Any estimates as to how much a teams' budget is eaten up by salaries of the engineers/tire changers/mechanics/etc...? How much of it is just depreciation or equipment mortgage (financing) costs, etc??? How could anyone blow that much money? They need to basically bring piles of money and burn them in the fireplace/furnace?
Someone mentioned a wind tunnel costs about $1000 US/hr?? How about F1 tires? Touring car tires costs $900US/set. For the bigger teams, aren't the wind tunnels shared with the regular/road car divisions? Last edited by kmchow; 3 Sep 2002 at 00:43. |

Re: Re: Team member Salary/budgets/money again?
Salaries might vary according to teams depending on their experience and technical skills but here is a breakdown on how much does a complete formula1 racecar cost in Euros.
PARTS SINGLE PRICE (€) AMOUNT NEEDED TOTAL AMOUNT (€) Monocoque 112,360 1 112.360 Bodywork 8,026 1 8.026 Rear Wing 12,842 1 12.842 Front Wing 16,051 1 16.051 Engine 240,770 1 240.770 Gearbox 128,411 1 128.411 Gear Ratios(set)112,360 1 112.360 Exhaust System 9,631 1 9.631 Telemetry 12,8411 1 128.411 Fire Extinguisher 3,210 2 6.420 Brake Discs 964 4 3.856 Brake Pads(2/wheel) 642 8 5.136 Brake Calipers 16,051 4 64.205 Wheels 1,124 4 4.496 Tyres 642 4 2.568 Shock Absorber 2,087 4 8.346 Pedals (set) 1,605 1 1.605 Dashboard 3,210 1 3.210 Steering System 4,815 1 4.815 Steering Wheel 32,103 1 32.103 Fuel Tank 9,632 1 9.632 Suspension 3,210 1 3.210 Wiring 8,026 1 8.026 GRAND TOTAL € 926.490 In addition to the build costs, thousands of pounds will be spent on designing the car. Design costs include the making of models, using the wind tunnel and paying crash test expenses etc. The cost of producing the final product will be €7,700,000.00. I've tried to arrange it nicely but it dosen't work, sorry about the messy table. Last edited by Jukebox; 3 Sep 2002 at 01:35. |

What I want to know is how does any one MAKE any money off of Formula One. I kind of understand the whole trickle down theory of Pay big bucks to race=win races=people see your ads on the cars, and track billboards=more people buy your product=you get rich, but other than Ferrari and maybe Honda I cant see that working for most of the other teams. How much prize money is given out for a first, second or thrid. Is it per race or per champianship?

Unlike CART and Nascar where it is possible to turn a profit as a team owner and get excellent coverage as a sponsor, I guess F1 is all just goodwill and PR. I guess racing in F1 is priceless?
So looking at Jukebox's numbers, the actual parts are cheap to produce? It seems all the costs are associated with the actual design as well as the costs of the machinery/factories to produce those parts?? Overhead seems to be what is responsible for F1's high costs. If the FIA really cared about F1, perhaps they should institute some standardized parts like brakes, suspensions, transmissions?? Anyone know how much a tirechanger makes? Are they dedicated tirechangers or are they mechanics when the car is not racing? |

Some F1 teams turn a profit too (shocker?) As for the sponsors I am sure they must be getting some return on their investment otherwise they wouldn't sponsor anymore |

It's amazing how teams like Pacific in 1994 survived on a budget of about $5,000,000.

Nah... let the engineers go wild, I say... Give them a rough set of rules, and whatever revolutionary concept they want to introduce.. let them do it! Why stifle everyone's creativity in the name of keeping costs down? If you can't afford it in F1, for heaven's sake, go to CART and race... |
