The Worst F1 Car Ever?
While we're all sitting around waiting for the racing to start again,I was searching the memory banks for the worst F1 car to ever make the back of the grid or DNQ as the case may be.Heres a few, what other mobile chicanes spring to mind?.
#1 the BRM P207,what were they thinking of when they bought the V12 back again in '77,It finished of the careers of many hapless renta-drivers who tried to qualify it. |

The magnessium-chassised air cooled V8 Honda RA 302. I can't think of a more tragic entry in F1, ever. Total Disaster.

The 1990 Life is always my answer when this question comes forward. The engines in it would rarely survive more than 2 laps at racing speed, and were chronically slow even when they did/. At best the car was 15 sconds off the pre-qualifying pace, even with Giacomelli in the car.

the 1996 Ferrari. Irvine said it was a "dog".
the 1997 Lola-Ford. it had only one race, it failed to qualify. the 1999 BAR-Supertec. It broke down all the time. |

Another classic lemon- the Ligier JS31.
From the outside it looked stunning, under the skin was a different story- Michel Tetu's radical design had it's fuel tanks split into two- one part between the engine and driver and one sitting behind the Judd V8, with plumbing to connect the two. The idea was apparently to lower the centre of gravity and improve the cars weight distribution....it didn't work, the chassis lacked rigidity and the handling was awful Stefan Johansson reckoned it was the worst car he'd ever driven, Guy Ligier sacked the designer..... |

What about the first AGS (the JH21?) from 1988 or so which was made from the moulds of the 1983 Renault RE30?
Or the first Forti which was a five year old F3000 in disguise, or The Andrea Moda which Pel 'drove' - or any Simtek (build quality...) The Life was never proven as shyte - it had a W12 engine as I remember - I rather think worst engine not worst car... Last edited by JR Ewing; 22 Nov 2002 at 14:06. |

For the last 2 races life used a standard V10 engine (Ilmor I think) and were still miles off the pace, so it wasn't purely the engine that stank.
That brief spell in a 1987 AGS kind of got Moreno used to doing superhuman things with hopless cars- teh Andrea Moda he got onto the grid at Monaco, the Eurobrun he once qualified ahead of Mansell in a Ferrari, and the Coloni as well. |

The Kurtis-Kraft in the 1959 USGP,was only 43 seconds a lap slower than the pole sitter.Makes Minardi look good.

Dwya-this italian creation was so bad it never actually entered a WC race.Failed to qualify for an Aurora British F1 event at Monza.
Chevron B41 also never did 'proper' F1. |
