Skaife helmet attatchment/airbox
Another US viewer via Speedvision. I remember that thread about the 'Xbox' air vent thingy on the front of Skaife's helmet and some other guys. Would anyone know where i could find some more info? I do some lower level racing here in the states and it can get pretty hot in a tin-top and id like to learn more about the system and if its a custom Holden thingy or some sort of aftermarket product
Thanks, its a great series! |

Nah, I believe they are made in house at TWR, well that's the impression that I got from the Mark Skaife Diary (xmas present- I was waiting until it was in the $2 bin ). A lot of other competitors have them on the sides of their helmet (might be a standard fixture on some Bell models). The front mounted HRT style might provide better air flow, but I think it would get in the way more than the side mounted ones. Also, what happens when your head hits the steering wheel?? But it is a good idea none the less..

Bell do a "Vortex forced air" helmet which has side venting.
Skaifes helmet is a Arai and they don't show anything on any of their sites, although I know they do some side vented ones for Nascar. If you've got the money they will probably custom build one for you. |

Apparently the HRT ones were made inhouse in the composites department, designed and manufactured by Peter Schaefer.

Made in house? Ok so then they must be tested and approved is there a place in Australia that does this? because they are destruction tests they would have to build a few.
I said an Arai because in one of the photo's I have seen you can cleary see an Arai sticker on the helmet, maybe he's changed it since. |

Maybe they are an Arai thing. I tried to get photos of everyone in their car at the Surfers round, and the only other driver outside of TWRA drivers with a 'Vader' was Mark Larkham, and it is clearly labeled an Arai.

Actually, looking at it now, Larko's is different to Kelly's.
Finally one of the Bell examples (not plugged in) |

I think TWR built their own... Not sure if hey did crash test them either but presumably all that stuff was taken care of regulatory wise...
A risk perhaps that the extended part hits the wheel in an accident and ends up doing a 'Peter Williamson' from Bathurst 1986, only in a closed face helmet |

Nascar drivers have the same cooling device here in the states too. The cooling device into the driver's helmet and suit were invented by Nasa. So I am glad the V8 drivers has something to cool off in the hot driver's compartments.

Here is a photo of my son's Aria. It has slots in the chin guard area for air flow into the helmet.
Possibly all the V8 teams are doing is attaching the hose and so that they can force coool air into these slots. This wouldn't require an alteration to the basic structure of the helmet as it as an add on. |

Speed ive never seen the V8 system in NASCAR. Very few guys use Arai helmets and the air vents consist of the side 'nozzle' under the visor
