I've finally managed to dig it out. It was at Thruxton, round 5, of the 1989 season:
"These turkey's, they're gonna have to start getting up early in the morning if they want to take me and my team on. "They turn up with their big transporters and their good looking motorhomes, they prance around the paddock all day long in their overalls, right, but when it comes to getting the business done they're a bunch of wallies except Andy." After winning at Thruxton a couple of rounds earlier, other teams alleged that Brodie had been running with illegal fuel. He had this to say about that: "In 26 years of driving saloon cars, right, there's only one person in this paddock who's ever been in front of me and that is Andy Rouse. The rest of them are a bunch of Group N drivers and why should they be in front of me. They never did it before, why should they now? "Guy Edward's has had more spins than rock around the clock. Frank Sytner's had more rolls than Joe's Chip Corner Cafe. And what sort of example is that to set the public? I think it's diabolical...In 26 years of driving saloon cars, I've never seen such pitiful, ridiculous driving like it in my life." |

Oh, and by the way, he put it on pole (by almost a second from Rouse) and then walked off into the distance until a puncture towards the end...

Ha HA, I have the 3hr video of the 1989 BTCC and not only were Brodie's comments funny as but there were some classics when Graham Goode and Tim Harvey launched at "That Mike bl*ody Smith." The best though had to be Tim Harvey after completely wiping himself and Mike Smith out, totally blames Smith when it was totally his fault!
Ahh, the adrenaline charged interviews are always the best! I am looking forward to Monday as the car I use on trackdays came from Formula Saloons, group c. It is a Saff Cossie but with only 270hp. I wonder if Mr Brodie would be prepared to divulge spring rates and camber, toe and castor settings?........... Laters Ben |

If only we had characters like that these days then the BTCC would be News of the World material...

Yes Ben, I got the qoute off the video. Tim quite clearly was at fault at Brands, but I think he knew that really. The thing was that Smithy had run ins with just about anyone he could get close enough to and it usually WAS his fault. Of course, he never admitted it though.

By far the best part of that season was for me (and I am a huge Ford man) the antics of Frank Sytner and James Weaver in the Prodrive E30 M3s. Awesome close racing with great in-car footage culminating in stock car tactics from Sytner. Have to say he got what he deserved though and Weaver was able to rise above it with a great deal of class, something lacking in Sytner's thuggish behaviour!!
My favourite race that year for the sheer spectacle was watching the RS500s at the Birmingham Superprix. Seeing the tyres going off as they struggled to put down leary 500hp was great fun! Mapping and engine building has come a long long way since then and those fellas did not have it easy when they came on boost. No build up, no air injectors or roller bearing turbos just an on/off boost map!! Thats's when men drove race cars and drank 5 star for a brew instead of the boring fwd we see today. Regards Ben (just an old git of 33!) |

Andy Rouse is running his ex-DTM Mercedes at Brands tomorrow in the 2-hour Britcar round with his son Julian.
Now how good would it be if Dave Brodie and his son could get out in one of the Britcar races this year and go head to head with Andy and Julian!!?? |

went to Silverstone on Sunday fro the qualifying mainly to see the Formula Saloons. Very disappointing. There were only about 12 cars running. The super tourers don't really get me going as they are still mega money/motorhome territory and there were only a handful of interesting cars; 1 x wheelarched lhd RS500, Jimmy Brodie's RS500; 2 x Holdens and 1x Camaro.
Much more fun watching the classic thunder saloons methinks. Can't see the Formula Saloons continuing being a success if it's just going to be for rich kids in their supertourers. Anyhow, what do I know? Ben |

What a great quote. Too bad I can't get the 1980s videos, that would be cool.

Ben, your exactly right when you say what do you know.
Firstly there was 18 cars for qualifying and it was a cracking race with under a second seperating 4 cars on the line. Formula Saloons is not for rich kids in their Super Tourers and are not mega money and motorhome territory. You can buy one for between £20,000-£30,000 ( front running BMW in the Kumo's will cost that ) and you can win the Championship on £20,000. Thats not bad for a National A Championship. Next time you visit a circuit where we are racing come and have a chat with the drivers and you will soon realise that although some drivers are fairly flush many are not and are just realising their dreams of driving the best saloons there is. |

Sorry I don't have the facilities to do that anyway.
Besides, it's infringing copyright rules... |

Ben,
I was also at Silverstone Monday, did you actually see the Formula Saloon race? The race was the highlight of the day, outshining the BOSS, now theres a championship for rich boys and there toys (apart from leading 2/3). The mixture of V8S & Cosworths with hard driven Supertourers was a great spectacle, everything that lacks in BTCC at moment. Why is D.Broadie getting involved do you think! I watched at Abbey and the action was non stop! Anyone else there? |

I don't know to be honest - the guy is totally unknown to me. It's not so much a commentary - more of a race report being read out if you know what I mean. |

Hmmmmm, maybe I have been too hasty then? I only had time to see the qualifying as was off to Donington in the p.m. I stood at the first corner inside after the pit straight (haven't driven Silverstone so please forgive my ignorance as to the name) and there was this fella in the Audi crew standing on the banking with his headset on obviously listening to the driver and for me that was overkill. Maybe I am biased but to me racing is as Dave Brodie once eloquently put it........ ;-)
As regards talking to people Gary, I got the distinct impression from strolling at the back of the pits that to enter and have a chat was off limits. By your comments however, it looks like I missed out. Which car do you drive and I shall make a point of introducing myself at the next opportunity since, as I have said earlier, I have a vested interested with running Chris Southcombe's old Saff now at trackdays and am looking to race it next year............. probably in Classic Thunder Saloons though as I may have half a chance then! Regards Ben |
