Lydden Hill Trackside Facilities
I have been going to Lydden Hill since 1997 and must say that the place could do with a major overhaul. The food prices are astronomical and the lack of them poor I queued from 2pm to 3:25pm for a burgar!. There is a distinct lack of bins, so rubbish gets put everywhere and the brick toliets are quite possibly the worst permenant urinals I have ever used. That wouldnt be so bad if you could dry your hands with a dryer or paper towels etc. This situation has been the same for the 6 years I have been going.
Apart from that it's a great place! |

It is probably a thing called a very uncertain future of the track Robin. Due to the problems that have gone on between the Council and McClaren then i am sure this has something to do with it, as they could just simply pull the plug on it without much notice.
I could be wrong, but that is what i have been told. But still great to see a big crowd! |

I think part of the problem was the sheer size of the crowd - I'm not sure they were expecting that many people to turn up. Lydden is a relatively small venue and just doesn't have the infrastructure to cope with vast crowds. Other than that it's a top circuit, especially from a spectators point of view as you can see just about all of the track no matter where you stand.
As Peter mentions the future of the track is far from certain as McClaren have planning permission to develop the site, I think racing is garaunteed for next year but not sure about beyond 2004. It does strike me as very strange though, McClaren shouldn't even be considering closing the circuit - how can a racing team justify closing a race circuit? Especially a 'grass roots' circuit like Lydden, we need circuits like Lydden as they allow people to participate in motor sport on a budget and locally. (Kind of went off the point but it does wind me up somewhat) |

I concur with what Bert says - we need grass root circuits. I'm 31 now and my folks used to take me to watch the bangers every fortnight - I had to stand on a set of kitchen steps to see over the fence. I've grown up with the place and can't (and don't want to) imagine it closing.
The only point I would disagree Robin is the fact that the facilities haven't changed for 30 years, let alone 6! It's about time that old bus was disposed of - fine when it was used as the marshals signing on office, but it's just derelict and an eyesore now. |
