Cortina rear lights at sportscars

when i was looking at old race-car pictures, i noticed the cortina mk 1 rear lights fitted to several sports-cars:

Lola MK 1
Howmet
TVR Griffith
Walker Elan

Are there some more?
Why did they take this items?

"Why did they take this items?"

Probably because they were cheap & in good supply.

I think Piper too. Now they were hairy, both the youngsters who I knew had them when new had really bad shunts on the road with much damage to the cars, but surprisingly little to themselves!

Not all Pipers ended up as shards of glassfibre - heres one at Gurston earlier this month. Sorry - I didn't get a shot of the rear lights.

They look good as well. It's not as bad as those TVRs with the old Fiesta tail lamps

Let's get realistic here - the Mk1 Cortina lights had a certain style, but their most important feature was probably that they could be mounted on a flat panel, unlike most light clusters of the era. I can imagine many decisions in the small hours of the morning that maybe a cutoff Kamm tail would give an aerodynamic advantage, not to mention saving many hours with a Surform and wet-and-dry.

my only experience of kamm tails is on my Vixen, all it seems to do is create suction to bring exhaust fumes all over the back of the car! very good point re flat panels . . . the escort capri MK1 lights where the 70's equivalent I guess.

There have been some strange rear lights fitted to exotic cars. The Jag XJ220 had Rover 200 lights and the Marcos LM GT car had Mondeo hatchback lights on it. Very strange.
