Schumacher did great again
Well, I thought there would be talk about this subject already, but seems not, so I want to kick it off.
Kimi's lap today was great, especialy bearing in mind the difficulties he has had in qualifying this season, but I have to say, I thought Schumi was that bit more special again. Down after the firt corner, then his mistake, but to see his time at the next sector, the gap down to hundredths, and to then bring the time down further, I thought was really special. The thing is, this, I think, is the first season for him whereby the youngsters are chipping away at him. He's the elder statesman now, and the thing he must fear is when are they going to be seen to be quicker than him? Well, as he's shown again today, not yet. And I just love this type of scenario. He has shown again that apart from all the usual guiles an older driver will have over the younger, he's still plain quicker, and that is obviously still very important to him. Witness the punching of the air during the slow down lap. It's great to watch, and I'm fascinated to see how long it may continue. Heebee |

It was a great lap for sure..a "Michael lap" in many ways..he's got the ability to raise the bar and thats something thats helped in making him the champion that he is.
People like Kimi,Alonso etc are going to be major threats in the future but I think he welcomes the competition. For sure, he's a hard racer and Kimi in particular has shown he too is a gritty customer so I hope to see a championship battle between those two before Michael retires...safely from the sport. |

Yes, but he is the reigning champion, master pole taker, with, as everyone in his camp tells all who will listen, by far the best car his team has ever given him. This is a non-story. I would have like to have seen the outcome had Kimi gone last and failed.

Michael flourishes under this new format. The pressure is intense, the stakes are high and a driver must find the right balance between overdriving and being conservative. Michael is usually a master of knowing how much grip is on track and being able to teeter on the fine edge. Today, he made a hiccup, but boy was that comeback something special!!!!

But is Fangio better than him? Doh...
Who cares if which are the better driver, each from their own era? Fangio being better doesn't take away anything from Michael being the best of his time, and a wondefully brilliant driver who's great to watch. Last edited by Gt_R; 18 May 2003 at 02:39. |

I do not agree that Schumacher did a fantastic qualifying. If in fact he is driving a ferrari which is "1 second" faster then the rest of the field, he did a dismill flying lap. He barely beat Kimi who is running an older car. Sure he did qualify first, but it wasnt fantastic.
Same old same old. |

f1grandprixshop, he did say "IF" afterall..
you know...all the ifs and effies... So you know how pathetic he'd claim the new Mclaren to be if it is not a minute faster than the next faster car... |

previous runners had made the track dirty duo to their excursions. He was two tenths+ down after the first corner, and must have been further down after his error at turn two. That meant he had what, three quarters of a lap left to drive much faster than his opponents, in uncertain track conditions. A nice safe second or third fastest probably wouldn't have done his race any harm. But he did it. That lap came from the driver, not the car. |
