DNQ should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Best Drivers of the 1960s

Well we've had the since 94 thread (BTW, I choose 1994 on due to the fact that Mansell, Senna, Prost and Piquet weren't a factor in that time period), the 70s thread and the 80s thread. Here is the 1960's version.

I haven't decided on my picks yet, but I can tell you, Jimmy Clark will be #1, that's for sure, and Jacky Ickx will be plastered somewhere on the list too.

How about drivers of the 1920s just to make it interesting?

1920s, trying to stick to GP drivers, though most did sportscars as well:

Robert Benoist
Rudolf Caracciola
Henry Segrave
Felice Nazzaro
Antonio Ascari
'W Williams'
Jimmy Murphy
Louis Chiron

Not sure about the last two - Varzi and Nuvolari did start racing in the 1920s, but they should probably be on a 1930s list!

I'll get back to you on the '60s!!

Copied the above list and made some changes. Wouldn't necessarily suggest that they are in order of superiority either.

Apologies Mekola. Itz juzt that z is near s and I prefer it (s that is). But I really thought it was spelled with an "s". As opposed to Gonzalez with a "z".

And Spearce. I'm lazy ok? You got another point?

Jordi should be qualifying in the top 10 on the gridJordi should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
1. Clark: Possibly the best ever
2. Stewart
3. Moss - not much racing in the sixties, but boy was he quick
4. Brabham - won as a driver and as a driver/constructor
5. Hill - not like Clark, but very good nonetheless
6. Rindt - quick
7. von Trips - what would have been?
8. Surtees - the Rossi of the 50's won in F1 as well and was damn good at it
9. Gurney - The only driver Clark feared
10. Amon - too unlucky

Jim Clark - The Greatest
Jackie Stewart - Perfectionist
Graham Hill - Larrakin but worked very hard at his job
Jochen Rindt - Deserved more luck but very, very quick
Dan Gurney - Was far better than his career win tally shows
Jack Brabham - Workmanlike performances
Bruce McLaren - Under-rated and started an empire
John Surtees - Great rider, great driver
Chris Amon - He deserved a win. More wins actually...

The 60s produced a LOT of big names. Someone who knows little about race drivers will know more out of the 60s then probably any other decade.

I guess it depends how old they are!

My list (not in order):

Clark
Moss
Hill, G
Surtees
Stewart
Gurney
Ickx
Siffert
Amon
Brabham

Honourable mentions go to Rindt and Rodriguez - both produced either their best driving after the '60s and/or in other categories (eg. Pedro in Sportscars), but I might change my mind and put them in next time!

There were so many good drivers during the 60's but due to the level of competition, most of the time they are ignored.

Particularly guys like Richie Ginther and Jo Siffert...

I put Moss 10th because he didn't really get a fair crack at the 60's but his win in the lotus at Monaco was tops.
