....were they still using skips to protect those nice trees from any nasty 'off piste' cars ???

that always used to be the way, but I didn't go this year so I don't know....
The park can be dangerous to spectate in too, I think those skips were for the marshals to jump into! |

The skips were still there, but as Irv says, more for the marshals than the trees, the latter are a "renewable resource"!
