Firman Crash

From ITV.com
Quote:
The first practice session at Hungary on Saturday has been red flagged after Ralph Firman crashed heavily.

The Jordan driver lost his rear wing going into the fifth corner of the Budapest track and lost control of his car before hitting the armco barrier at speed.

The Briton was able to get out of the car but has been taken to the medical centre for further checks.

It is not yet known if anyone was injured in the incident. It is believed some photographers may have been hit.

The session will continue once the stewards have repaired the barrier.
Does anyone know what happened. Sounds pretty serious.

Seems he is OK. From F1racing.net:

Quote:
RALPH FIRMAN escaped serious injury in a horrifying high speed crash at the Hungaroring during Saturday morning practice but was airlifted to hospital for further tests. ( Saturday Photos / Session Times )

28-year-old Firman lost control of his Jordan Ford EJ13 at over 160mph when his rear wing failed. This sent the car hurtling over the gravel trap at turn four backwards before he drilled into the tyre barrier which would need some 25-minutes of frantic activity to repair.

The incident came fifteen minutes into the 45-minute practice session and was halted immediately. Firman looked shaken by the incident when he was helped from the cockpit by a marshal, but he was able to sit up on a stretcher and remove his own helmet before acknowledging the concerned crowds with a wave.

Firman was then rushed by ambulance to the circuit medical centre where he underwent tests.

Team boss Eddie Jordan has confirmed that Firman is going for a scan at a hospital as a precautionary measure.

"Ralph has a slight pain in his foot but otherwise he is in good condition and is thankfully still very much aware of what is happening," Jordan explained. "They are now just taking precautionary measures to ensure he is completely ok and checked out at ths hospital."

There is no word yet whether Firman would be fit enough to drive in qualifying this afternoon or even tomorrow's race. A similarly heavy crash during Saturday morning practice at Monaco saw Jenson Button forced to miss the race on medical orders.

Stay tuned for more news as it breaks...

Saw the crash earliuer before work, looked very painful and lucky that the photographers were further down the safety barrier which looked as though Firman was gonna do a Mcnish at one point.

Ouch? It's the brain they're worried about - symptoms from impacts like this often don't show up for a long while...

nasty accident indeed , the speed of the car when it left the track was amazing.

hope he can recover quikly but if he has a broken ankle it may take some time.

thanks for the link to the video BTW , I had to download a DivX player but I got it to work.
