I am an A level student and a massive motorsport fan. I need details+images about transporters and the companies who make them. All replies will be gratefully recieved.

I know that Renault makes them, Mercedes probably too. I would post a pic of the BAR transporter but I don't have a scanner.

The vast majority of race trucks - at least those in Europe; I presume this is all pretty similar worlwide - are of the articulated type, although there will be a small number of rigid wagons around too - usually for smaller series such as the DTM or sportscars.
These articulated vehicles are comprised of a 40ft maxi cube tri-axle trailer coupled to a suitably sized tractor unit. The trailer would usually comprise a workshop which packs up with space for storage and transportation of the racecars when they are going to/from the circuit. These trailers would be constructed to order by a small number of highly specified coachbuilders. The tractor units, however, are usually pretty standard machines - though most often they are top of the range, and highly powered. In the UK, the most popular types would be from Scania, the Mercedes Actros, Renault Magnum, and occasionally you will find one or two from MAN and Ford/Iveco. The choice of tractor unit would invariably be tied to the engine in the race car itself - for example, Benneton (Supertech powered) will utilise Renault Magnums, Mclaren will have Mercedes Acros, etc. Hope this helps. |
