7 Minutes to go ....
The channel 7 commentators mentioned something was to happen with the Monaro's at 23hours and 53 minutes.
Initially they speculated that the 2 leading cars were permited to 'race' up until this point, and then it became obvious it was the opposite. Why were they not permitted to 'race' until this point? Why, with an easy and well deserved 1-2 in the bag did GR allow them to take risks? (as much as I admired him for it) The only thing I can come up with is that with 7 minutes to go, the Porsche could not have done the same amount of laps even if they'd taken each other out. Thus they would win from the side of the track. But dont the cars have to cross the line under their own power to be classified? |

wasn't it that you had to complete a lap within 7 of the finish to be classified a finisher? Hence the smoke cloud 200sx's..

That was the best racing I've seen since moffat just nipped ahead of bond to win at bathurst in 1977.

Not sure if this is what it is, but you had to finish within 5mins of the leading car crossing the line to be classified a winner.

The results on the PROCAR site show the SAE BMW as having finished 33rd, with 50 slow, painful, sad laps under its belt.
It lapped 20 seconds off its possible pace... but still finished kinda |

While it had problems & couldn't compete to it's full potential the SAE team can take solace from the fact that the car looked really good while on the track, hopefully they'll have another crack at the event next year.

And they were one of the better presented crews as well, all in team shirts and overalls that matched. Mr Searle can certainly be proud of the effort put in, if not the ultimate result.

I get the feeling that they were fairly serious at the end of the race, just judging by the sighs of relief and comments like "I was ****ting myself" coming from the crew...

I'll admit that at the circuit it didn't look to me like they were going at it over the last few laps.
After getting home and watching the tape, it did look alot better and like they were having a go. |

On the tv it certainly looked like they were having a go up through Reid and Sulman parks, but I would think the reality was Tander was never going to have a go unless he was able to make it a clean cut clinical move. Or Murph made a mistake.

Nnever suggested Murph would bugger up, just that it was one of only two possibilities for Tander to have a go. It was never going to happen if it was a fifty-fifty proposition.
