Friend interested in Marshaling

Hi Marshals,

a friend came to watch a few races last year, and really enjoyed it. He is interested in starting marshaling to get more involved in motorsport, and watch some races on the cheap

I've read through a few older threads on how to start, but I thought I'd get a few responses to forward on to him.

He can ONLY take the marhals training day at CastleCombe due to working restrictions - however once he has the license he is keen to mashal around the UK (following his work)

How often are the training days at combe ? he is interested in marshaling on track and at rallys are their 2 different grades of licenses for marshals ?
are there any costs involved in starting marshaling ? (other than the nasty orange kit)

general advice to give to a newbie would be appriciated.

Thanks

Matt

(PS see you combe marshals in the next week or so !) blackcrow I owe you a pint

Tell him to have a look at the marshal's club website - www.marshals.co.uk - its probably got all the answers he needs. Alternatively if you know the clubs who are organising the meetings he wants to marshal at, if you look in the Fixture List which came with the Blue Book (you know that thing that keeps your licence flat in the post!) it has a list of all the chief marshals. He could always contact one (or all) of them for a chat to see what he wants to do next.

Hope this helps

Sheila

The best bet is to have him look at the BMMC website as it gives all sorts of useful information there www.marshals.co.uk if he needs any further information after that by all means ask away here, we would all be glad to help.

Hi Matt

Missing the Training Day is not a problem. Suggest that he drops a line to Chief Marshal Adrian Fawdington who will be able to provide all the necessary details.

afawdington@hotmail.com

Orange suit certainly not necessary in the early days.

Perhaps come along to the first meeting on the 27th March and give it a try. There will be other newbies there so I'm and as Nighthawk said, we are a friendly bunch and he'll be made most welcome.

Ian,

yes you are correct, and I will have ago this year, might make some good reading, but as I am working away at the moment I'm a bit strapped from time.

A friend who enjoyed watching the racing last year certainly wants to have a go, and thanks to the advice above I'll put him on the correct track to getting his first oil stain on his Tango suit.

I do remember you suggesting you might also have a go Ian...

Very highly recommended, that one. You'll definitely have a good day, don't miss it.

I'm the one in Bath b1ackcr0w, my friends actually closer to combe - once he's got his first day under his belt though, at a track he knows and knows what to expect at he has said he'll be dotting around as he wants to see other circuits - just depends on his time as he works away from home
