Hi,
I am making race reviews of Aussie ATCC and V8 races, and would like some more about the 1992 Bathurst race. I was only six at the time, and all i can remember is the rain, Skaife's Red Flagging crash, and Dick crossing the line first, but not winning. Very odd race. Anyone got pictures? Please contact me at formula1@www.com, or post onto this forum. BTW, my picks for Bathurst 2000: 1. Paul Radisich & Jason Bright (Ford Falcon) 2. Mark Larkham & Alain Menu (Ford Falcon) 3. Craig Lowndes & Mark Skaife (Holden Commodore) 4. Larry Perkins & Russell Ingall (Holden Commodore) 5. Paul Weel & Greg Crick (Ford Falcon) Have a mega day |

seems quite a lot of people around the traps think that bight/radisich will win - cant wait til qualifying starts.....as for 92 bathurst - thats when jimmy called everyone a pack of a-holes, is this the race that denny hulme passed away in, my memory is being tested

Bathurst 1992 was probably the most controvesial race ever at bathurst because of the red flag and Nissan being given the win even though their car was demolished in the pile up at forrest elbow..and yes 92 was the year denny hulme passed away as I have refered to in my article in the latest ten tenths newsletter.(hint ..go have a read !!!).the problem with the race was as the rules state if there is a red flag the results should be taken back to the last completed lap but as Jim richards was leading the race at the start of the last lap he was given the win even though he was involved in the crash that stopped the race and never again crossed the line.
my view is rules are rules and if thats what the rules state then so be it..i dont know if this has changed since then but on that day whether you like it or not the nissan was the winner and i also fully support jim in his actions on the podium even though i was amazed at seeing him go off at the fans like that I totally agreed with him and felt a little saddened by the crowds reaction. it was an interesting race to say the least and I hope this years race doesnt end up like that one but a bit of rain would spice it up a hell of a lot more (Not that it needs it) sorry crash no pics but i do have some pics from the Winton round in 92 somewhere ???? |

mladin is an awesome rider and I would kill to see him back in the world series.
funny you should mention the Longhurst Bowe incident..I was standing at turn 2 with my camera and was taking a snapshot of them as the entered the turn..got it no probs but as i lowered my camera they hit and off went Bowe..if only i had of taken the shot 2 seconds later it would have been a heck of a shot..i will try and hunt it down and post it. |

i do remember that lap after lap bowe and longhurst were racing hard and there accident was only a matter of time.....as for mladin, heard a rumour that US suzuki want to sign him for another 3 years, i hope not - unless foxtel decide to televise ama with both mladin and gobert going head to head, the yankee dollar must be pretty awesome for mladin to stay over there

Hi Crash!
Bathurst 1992 is the only race in history I can think of, where I ended up being so totally and utterly p****d off, that I swore I would never watch it again, on principal. (that didnt last, I have watched it every single year since) As Marcus says, rule are rules...... but that doesnt stop it sticking in my throat everytime I think about it. I dont have any pictures, but I do have the official video. Perhaps if you look up references to "Godzilla" you might find a few. Cheers! |

Amazingly, Marcus that rule hasn't been changed, it still applies. Hypothetical scenario, 20 laps to go, you're in front, car is shagged and won't make it home. Cause a red flag and you win, or carry on driving till the car dies and you're a DNF, hell of a choice to make!
Remember, early on in that final lap, Richards had a big shunt and destroyed the front of the car, there was no way he was going to do another lap, there were double yellows as Richo approached the scene but the video clearly shows he was driving so hard that the wheels were spinning! You have to wonder if team mangaement had been on the radio and told him to cause a red flag incident! It has also been suggested that race control brought out the red flag too early, after all it was a clear blue sky just minutes later, I wonder if any pressure was put on them and if so, where did it come from? An amazing race and a rather poor farewell for Group A. One more thing, to this day, the media say that the crowd booed Richo and Skaife because they were driving a Nissan, not a Holden or Ford. What a crock of ****! The crowd applauded their victory in '91, because they had the best car and drove it very well. The crowd booed them for taking home a trophy they didn't deserve. I can't stand Dick Johnson, but for me he will always be the moral victor of Bathurst '92. |

Think back to 1987's Great Race. No matter how wet it got, the Pace Car stayed on track throughout the race and never has there been a storm like back then on the Mountain. As for the 1992 event, well...
The officials certainly did call the race off too early. If anything, it should have carried on for at least another few laps at slow speed to see if the weather would clear and to allow the emergency crews to get the stricken machines off the track. Yes, the winning car at Bathurst in 1992 was certainly a Sierra. And for once, I'm not being at all biased towards them... |

David: I don't think the Richo car caused the red flag, heck, 3 cars had already gone off after Forrest Elbow, with another one to follow while the pace car was on the track, a car had flipped at the end of Mountain Straight, the driver got out of it albiet with a broken leg, and there were cars spinning everywhere.
I agree, Dick should have won, but still had they allowed the race to continue in the wet, who is to say that Crompton wouldn't have come good and passed the Sierra? He was playing rear gunner all day, and if it was slippery he probably could have taken it up to DJ. |
