Who's the strongest?
Ok, this is my first effort at a poll. Three teams will campaign four R8’s at this years 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Champion Racing: J.J. Lehto/Marco Werner/Emanuelle Pirro Audi Sport Japan Team Goh: Tom Kristensen/Rinaldo Capello/Seiji Ara Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx: Allan McNish/Frank Biela/Pierre Kaffer Audi Sport UK Team Veloqx: Johnny Herbert/Guy Smith/Jamie Davies Many years of experience, Le Mans and Sebring victories and driving titles are represented here. My question is, who has the strongest driver lineup. Most would agree that the 2004 Le Mans winner will come from this group of four. So who do you vote for and why? Bias is permitted of course. |

I voted for the Champion bunch. I feel they are the most well rounded group and I find them all to be top notch blokes. Pirro and Lehto have already worked together and Werner seams to gell in nicely. Biela/McNish/Kaffer are pretty tough to. But I feel Kaffer is the weak link there. The Goh team looks pretty scarry to. Tommy K and Dindo will be tough. I don't know much about Ara though. Although he looked good at the Spa and Le Mans 1000K races. The last pairing seems to be the most mis-matched, but heck, they're strong to.

Such strong lineups aren't they?
I'd honestly be happy for any of these to win, but i really hope McNish can pull it off... McNish for the sheer pace, Biela for stability (not repeating 2003 of course!) and Kaffer doesn't exactly seem that weak a link, judging by his Sebring performance - they're getting my vote. It is close though! |

Yes, but Herbert/Smith/Davies have long teeth. Both of the four crews are good of course.

I don't think it'll be as simple as right and wrong! Between 4 closely matched cars, luck is going to play a big part...
A bit off-topic, but is it likely that any of the teams will be able to do longer stints than the others? Surely they're all on Michelins, and i assume they'll have similar fuel mileage... |

Good question gi gav. And I'm not sure. I'd guess it will be pretty evenly matched in terms of car performance. I do give a nod to Veloqx, as they have the "two-car" advantage. This will give them a lot of benefit at Pre-Q's and practice/quals for the race. One extra car for fuel consumption calcs, race setup, quals set up, tyre testing, and adapting to the 2004 specs.

It's a tough one. I think they are evenly matched. I make it 15 Le Mans victories between all them, with each car having 2 winning drivers. I would have to go for the Nishy car or maybe Hebert, no the Goh car or is it Champion. It really is too close to call.

Ya gotta vote! There's been 86 views on this thread and only 11 votes. We need data. Like I said, be biased if you want. But seriously, I'm looking forward to this shootout. Reminds me of the customer 956/962 days.
Note to rdjones. I have it a bit different than you in terms of victories. I did this rather quickly, so anyone please correct me. Le Mans: Kristensen (5), Biela & Pirro (3), Lehto, Herbert, Smith, Capello & McNish (1) Total = 16 Sebring: Biela (3), Capello, McNish & Kristensen (2), Lehto, Werner, Herbert, Kaffer & Pirro (1) Total = 14 Petit Le Mans: Capello (2), Herbert, Lehto, Kristensen, Pirro, Biela & McNish (1) Total = 8 ALMS Driving Titles: Kristensen, Pirro, McNish, Werner & Biela (1) Total = 5 Talk about talent! I'll have to say it will be one of the Audi UK Team Veloqx cars, because of the two-car advantages already explained here. Between these two... i don't know, i haven't followed endurance racing long enough to really know much about the drivers, so won't try anything...

I went with Champion as well....
Great mix of experience, speed, veteran patience and aggressive skills to make passes in tough spots... But it was a tough choice....all of those drivers are among the very top of their craft..... |
