They Keep Getting SAFER and SAFER
Kentucky Speedway and it's investors are dropping $1M to install the 2nd-Gen SAFER barriers this season. When complete, 12 of the IRL's 14 ovals will have at least one version of the safety wall. This is great stuff, in conjunction with the HANS device science is continually making our sport SAFER!

I think that move has less to do with the IRL and more to do with trying to get a Nextel Cup date, still, good for all the series that race at that track though. That is one positive effect that NASCAR has on all of racing (even amateur) is that there's more money going into auto racing safety.

Kentucky Motor Speedway is an independent track... The NASCAR schedule is very full right now... and the changes they have made have been in favor of bigger markets and new markets where they don't currently run.... Although Kentucky Motor Spredway is close to Cincinnati and Louisiville, and less than 2 hrs. from Indy (I went there last August...what a great venue!!!), I don't see them getting a full-blown Nextel Cup event.... They do run the trucks there, and they also run Busch Grand National as well (IIRC, but could be wrong)... The IRL event sells VERY well there (the place was PACKED last August!), and with the other events they do, the SAFER barriers make sense....a worthwhile investment to keep the events they have.... That's my take on it... |

At this rate, it won't be long until every major-league oval has the SAFER barrier. And hopefully even the minor-leaguers and semi-pros will have the HANS device in the near future.

Do they come in a variety of colours?
I'd like to line my driveway with one. |
