Does Ambrose need a Southern name for NASCAR?
It got me thinking, with most of the NASCAR drivers coming from the good old 'Southerrrn U nite ed Staits', we'll have to work on Marcos' name so that the good ol' boys take him to 'hart'.
With all the 'Billy bob's' and 'juniors' and 'the thirds' racing, Ambrose name is just too straight forward. What about Billy Bob Ambrose? Or Marcos James Petty the 4th'? You just know that the Southern race commentators are going to call him 'Marcass Ambrowse' Ya'll come back now, ye' hearrr.... Last edited by beefybloke; 26 Apr 2005 at 04:50. |

Well, it'll have to be special to make him stand out... he might wish he'd been christened Dick Trickle, or Cottonmouth Moccasin or something... have you got a copyright on "beefybloke"? It'd stand out over there for sure :

You'd need to have a 'typical' southern name in there - Lee (for General - as in Lee Petty - Richard's paw) or Cletus, or Jim-Bob (or any of those hyphenated names) or just plain Coo-Coo (Sterling Marlin's Paw).
Could we explain to them that Tasmania is our Deep South and that he's as inbred as any of the best of their hillbillies? Show them where the second head's been removed, perhaps. Can Marcos play the banjo? Kramer |

Actually there are more Californians in Nextel Cup than from any other state.
So maybe "Jimmy" Ambrose, "Kevin" Ambrose or "Robby" Ambrose. |

When I look at NASCARs in 2005, I see names like Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, Jimmy Johnson, Michael Waltrip, Ryan Newman, Dave Blaney, Scott Riggs, and names like that. Pretty ordinary names, even down here. Not too many Cale Yarborough, Fireball Roberts, Cole Trickle, or stuff like that. There's Dale Earnhardt Junior, Rusty Wallace and a few good ole Southern names, but we've got Paul Radisich, Jason Bargwanna, Mark Winterbottom, Paul Dumbrell, Jamie Whincup and a few other names to amuse the Yanks.
I think 'Marcos Ambrose' is as distinct and different as any name an Aussie in NASCAR land could have. |

Coo-Coo Marlin (already mentioned). Lake Speed. Hut Strickland. Smoky Yunick (car builder, not driver - but the principle is the same). Ned Jarrett (pronounced Ney-ud Ja'at), Buddy and Buck Baker, Buckshot Jones, Eldon Dotson, Doc Faustina - that's just the first six letters of the alphabet (I checked at Nascar.com).
But maybe they think "Mark", "Russell", "Jason" and "Greg" are strange names. |

Buddy Boys, Rich Bickle, Pancho Carter, Chad Chaffin, J.R Charbonneau, Johnny Coy Junior, Sonny Easley and good old L.D Ottinger. You'll also find a couple of guys by the name of Dick Johnson and Allan Grice on the A - Z of NASCAR drivers on the official site. There's no 'M Ambrose' there yet, I've checked..... |

I think Ambrose's name is American enough.
In the US Civil War they had a general (from the North/Union) with the name of Gen. Ambrose Burnside. Maybe if he changed Marcos with something else like Bob, Tom or even Henry (good ol' Henry), cause his last name is as American as apple pie (as the saying goes) |

Well, after just seeing a news story here in NZ about NASCAR and religion, I don't think it will be 'Marcos Ambrose' that is a problem, but 'Devil Racer' might not be so popular
