Motegi Practice Thread
Well, here's how there stacking up after the first practice session - oh, and there are 23 cars running at Motegi, very nice!
1) Helio Castroneves (No.3), 26.9071, 203.366mph 2) Dan Wheldon (26) 26.9866, 202.767 3) Dario Franchitti (27) 26.9967, 202.691 4) Tony Kanaan (11) 27.1005, 201.915 5) Buddy Rice (15) 27.1258, 201.726 6) Sam Hornish Jr. (6) 27.1983, 201.189 7) Vitor Meira (17) 27.3000, 200.439 8) Danica Patrick (16) 27.3315, 200.208 9) Kosuke Matsuura (55) 27.4559, 199.301 10) Scott Sharp (8) 27.526, 198.793 11) Bryan Herta (7) 27.5455, 198.653 12) Jeff Bucknum (44) 27.5591, 198.555 13) Patrick Carpentier (83) 27.5751, 198.439 14) Alex Barron (51) 27.5898, 198.334 15) Scott Dixon (9) 27.6736, 197.733 16) Tomas Scheckter (4) 27.6774, 197.706 17) Tomas Enge (2) 27.6898, 197.617 18) Ed Carpenter (20) 27.7394, 197.264 19) A.J. Foyt IV (14) 27.778, 196.990 20) Roger Yasukawa (24) 27.9456, 195.809 21) Ryan Briscoe (33) 28.0191, 195.295 22) Paul Dana (91) 28.718, 190.542 23) Darren Manning (10) 28.723, 190.509 Helio is looking very quick right out of the box, but AGR's heavy hitters are right behind him. Ganassi's boys are far off the pace... again! Jeff Bucknum looking very racy for his first time out in the second D&R car. Can Yasakawa respond to some presssure? Scheckter and Enge look slow in the Chevy's, so far. Buddy Rice need's to have a good race here, and so far, so good. Let's talk racing! |

Is that second session times or combined session times???
They look like "Practice 2" In the 1st session yesterday, Wheldon had a fire in his car and only did a couple of laps...must not have been serious enough to keep him from being fast in the 2nd session... Bucknum was near the bottom in the first, just to get a feel for things, and he feels there is a lot more in the car for him there... Helio thinks they can run as much as a half-second quicker by the time qualifying starts....just from the track getting more rubber laid down in the groove and teams tweaking their set-ups.... I think the only change from that list order though is Manning had some sort of problem, but IIRC, ran OK in the first session... I'll check it out and let you know... |

Combined sessions:
Top 4 the same. 5th - Meira -- 201.844 6th - Hornish - 201.810 I believe they both ran those in the early session... Rice had the same speed, but is 7th in the combined top speeds for the day... Manning's best speed was in the 196 range...22nd of 23 cars. Paul Dana was the slowest at 193 mph for his best time of the day... |

Wow, what's up with Manning? Not like him to be so far off the pace.
I have to wonder if Chip has bitten off more than even he can chew these days. He's got teams going in NASCAR, Grand AM, the IRL, and I think Bush to, and yet he is having little success in any of them these days. There has to be a point where your just doing to much, and maybe Ganassi has reached it. I think we may see a different Chip Ganassi after this year... |

Manning only ran two laps in the afternoon session.
It sounds like the same old story, but Ganassi's biggest problem is what's just behind the driver. If you look at those timesheets and take out the Penske's, the highest Toyota is 13th. On Friday morning the highest Toyota (aside from Penske's) was Manning in 12th, Briscoe in 14th and Dixon in 16th. |
