Mattracer should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Most formidable driver combinations.

With Sandown and Bathurst again looming on the horizon, what are the most formidable driver combinations past and present, regardless of how circumstances played out for or against them? Just the potential, how evenly matched and effective could/would they have been and which ones went further and fulfilled the potential?

Brock/Perkins
Brock/Skaife
Brock/Moffat

Perkins/Ingall

Johnson/Bowe
Johnson/Bartlett

Skaife/Richards (Jim)

Grice/Percy

Joe, Seto shared the Falcon with AJ in 1992 at Bathurst.

In addition to the more obvious ones above (Brock.Moffat etc)

Goss/Bartlett
Grice/Percy
Geoghegan/Geoghegan
McPhee/Mulholland, although their strategy was the best part of that combo
Bright/Richards
Perkins/Ingall
Johnson/Perkins
Bartlett/Bond
Richards/Hobbs
Morris/Fitzpatrick
Cecotto/Ravaglia
Percy/Ingall

In the 75+ nominations so far, Brock/J.Richards gets mentioned only twice, so I'd better add another vote for IMHO, the most formidable combination at Bathurst ever. Although Greg Murphy gets a few mentions, the Murphy/Kelly doesn't get a guernsey, despite winning the thing for the past two years, Marcos gets one mention, but only as 'should have been', and OS drivers get only a couple of votes. Hmm. On the other hand, SF gives Taylor/Reed and Wilmington/Barnes votes for the 'most formidable combination', so anything's possible.

(1) Brock/J.Richards
(2) Skaife/Lowndes
(3) Johnson/Bowe
(4) Moffat/Geoghegan

I'd only want to see that done in a Holden though - but then I like seeing Holden keep winning it!

I know this is not a previous pairing but I would like to see Brighty and Lowndesy paired together. Unlikely I guess but I think it would be a fast pairing...

In terms of most potential, you'd have to add Brabham/Moss from 78.

I think most formiddable, if you went by how much they won by, and with all their victories put together, would be pretty obvious.

Johnson/Bartlett would have made a mega combination in '83 if only they had a car worthy for the race. Skaife and Lowndes- forgot that one really. If only for '98 and '00.

The one permutation that seems to have been avoided in the pages of history- Lowndes/Brock- HRT Commodore.

Sir Jack and Stirling are absolute legends of motorsport, but a formidable Bathurst combination they weren't. At 50 and 47 respectively in 1976 (not 1978), with no previous 1000 experience (Jack knows his way around Bathurst better than most, but not that race), even in a decent car and team they would have struggled bigtime.

Your second sentence sounds like another vote for Brock/Richards.

I've gotta say, a Brock/Lowdnes in 1997 woulda have been amazing - and using the #15 commodore, the likelyhood of that damned airbox problem would have been lessened.

Yup - great pick up, Arrgh8. Brock/Perkins were good, but Brock/Richards both went on to prove that they could take other drivers under their wings and do the same thing.
