Indy cars at Brands Hatch

I meant to post this some time ago but never got round to it. I was watching the Bike GPs on Eurosport some time last year when the commentators started talking about the Rockingham 500. One of the commented that that it would be the first time for CART in europe.

Strictly speaking, this may be correct, but I am sure that Indy cars have been to the UK before. I have a distinct memory of watching a distinctive Marlboro liveried Penske at Brands Hatch, but I can't find any confirmation. I would guess it must have been around 1980 or maybe a bit later.

Anyone any idea if I am dreaming?

That's interesting, I seem to remember the CART commentators talking about the Rockingham race once and saying that it will be the first CART race in the UK, but they also said something about indy cars and Silverstone too.

Seeing as CART was only formed a few years ago...

It's predecessor did make the trip over though - visitng Silverstone and Brands Hatch in one hit. This is where the Brands Hatch Indy Circuit originated...

I don't believe the exercise was repeated though. Let's hope that the Rockingham race is!
