Abit silly for the round to clash with the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix wasn't it?

Well there were still 30,000 people out at Mallala !!!!!!!! A few would have been their because of Brocky but that is a massive crowd for a stand alone development series round. And good old VESA in their wisdom have dropped the round from next years calendar.

Meantime whispers from the collective powder room at Mallala suggest that there are 3 current development series teams eyeing off a place in the main game in 2007.
It has been suggested that OptimaSport, Howard Racing and O'Brien Motorsport are all looking at a couple of lazy franchise licence slots currently on the market... it will be interesting to see if any of these actually get up... Presuming any of this actually happened |

It's what was reported on the news. They might have got their crowd figures from VESA. Ha Ha Ha

'Twas the biggest crowd I have seen at Mallala since, well probably since Clipsal 500 started. But I doubt there was 30,000 there. I would have thought maybe 10-15,000 but I am generally a fairly poor judge of crowds. It is definetely a shame that Mallala is losing this round, and when it was mentioned on the weekend there was a lot of unhappy people.
As much as I love Clipsal, Mallala is an excellent track to take the family, but getting out at the end of the day was a bit of a headache. In the pre-Clipsal days when V8 Supercars used to race at Mallala they used to close the road out and make it 1 way into the Malllala township which would have alleviated much of the hassles on Sunday. I hope Sporting Car Club and Mallala can get this round back for 2008, I cant see them getting it back for next year now. |

Well it wouldn't be the first time someone's lied about crowd attendance... Ch 10 said there were 1,200 people at Bathurst today!

It is also in need of some serious upgrades... a resurfacing would start.. but the paddock is possibly the least good in the country

The main issue I think was that the competitors wanted the development series limited to 7 rounds and The Artist wanted Development races on at all Championship meetings where the main game has to be finished by 2pm due to 7's AFL coverage.Winton needed to pick up a round of the Development Series for its Championship meeting and Mallala was flicked instead of Wakefield Park.

Plus the fun of Carrera Cup allegedly wavering as to whether to support the VESA rounds in future years....

Also, why do you think Mallala needs resurfacing? I would have thought that Wakefield Park and Queensland Raceway need it more than Mallala does. Your comment about Carrera Cup is interesting also. Cup Car displeased with the imminent arrival of the GT Championship onto the V8Supercar card perhaps? |

I havent driven Mallala for three years or so but the surface seems pretty good. Its not what you would call bumpy. For bumpy go to AIR.. As far as the crowd goes at the weekend - I think the general chatter around settled at about 7,500 - 8K ish. About average for a majority of the rounds there. To be fair a few of us were expecting more but it wasnt bad at all. There is no way it was 30,000 - I was there in '97 for the Brock finale' and it took three hours to get from the grandstand to the intersection up the road. /end random muse. |
