Celebrating Queens Day at Assen: WSBK Round 5

Yep, round 5 already. The WSBK round at Assen has been moved from September to April (and I nearly forgot ). Monday the 30th our queen celebrates here birthday, which is a big thing as everybody gets a day of (except for me, as I am working for a foreign office ).

Anyway, expect lots of orange in the grandstands (and in the Yamaha garage).

Since King Carl has stopped racing (he won 12 times at Assen), it's been all about Bayliss (at least that's my impression). Sure he's binned it a few times, especially during that epic year when he was fighting it out with Edwards which cost him the championship. I've always had the feeling he's been the fastest.

This year will be different I think. It's all about To52land. He is definitely the man to beat. Yamaha has been on the pace since Donnington, so I'll be rooting for Haga-san.

I have to mention Max. During his 250 period he won (a couple of times) with what is still the biggest margin ever (I think). But when he stepped up to the bigger class he couldn't repeat that feat. Still I thought he was nowhere in Valencia, but in the 2nd race he was the quickest guy out there.

He doesn't have to be affraid for rain as it's been over 25degrees celcius here in Holland. But hey, this is Holland, we could have snow tomorrow.

Looking forward to it as usual. Interested to see how things continue to progress. Will we see another win from Toseland? Personally, I'd like to see Biaggi back on the top step. If for nothing else than to keep the championship race hot.

Yesterday was free entrance into the paddock to meet the riders and teams. Unfortunately I wasn't able to make it . Others were, they came back, completely dehydrated as they had been drooling over the bikes all day. They managed to get an autograph or make a quick chat with most of the riders, except... Max Biaggi. He did a short interview and left straight after . Come on Max, I'm always sticking up for you, but you're not making it easy for me. I guess he had some emporing to do .

My mates also made me aware of the fact that this years WSBK round in the Netherlands coincides with the release of the new WSBK game: http://www.sbk07.com/

Robin Harms has fallen and broken his collar bone during first practice for the supersport round. This happened coming out of the tight left hander going up the backstretch.

A lot of collar bones have already been broken coming out of this corner. There aren't many lefthanders left at Assen and therefore a lot of highsiders occur when going up the backstretch. Remember Rossi also crashed at Assen last year while going through a left hander.

Ruben Xaus, you da man! Ride the wheels off that thang!

Very true, another slow start from the Suzuki boys. We may see another ride through the pack from Biaggi.

Just shy of five tenths separate the top six.

It should have been Haga's. Incredible that he saved it. You could hear the fairing scrape over the tarmac. He has to come from way back now. Hope he does one (or two) of his famous starts!

JT slams them all again.

Good stuff from Haga as well (although expected!).

It was all a bit lurid when Haga and Xaus were battling up front for a while there.

Awesome second race, JT against Bayliss! Incredible move from JT, I thought he had him but he ran too deep into the final chicane and Bayliss just snatched it! Awesome!

Um, do you have any idea how difficult keeping a front wheel of a very powerful racing bike on the road when under hard acceleration is?

Pwoah, what a day! Having lived all those years in England have made me half British I think as I am all red now from sitting in the sun! This has been one of the best Superbike experiences for me as there wasn't one single boring race!

It was a real bummer that Haga had a DNF in race 2. It could have been a six-wheeler for the win! I think in both races he was in the lead by lap 4 or 5 (coming from 15th on the grid)!

It did look like JT pulled a wheely to celebrate the win in race 2, but upon watching the images at home, I think he just struggled coming out of the last chicane and therefore struggling to keep the front wheel on the tarmac.

Did anybody get injured by a flying helmet ?

Helmets off.

Still no information on how Bayliss managed to part ways with his helemt, it didn't look like he stopped anywhere on his slow down lap (not that I could see from the TV pictures anyway). I'm curious. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.

Forgot to mention this, where on earth did Smrz have for breakfast on Sunday and indeed Saturday? A case of bike (very old bike at that) and rider suiting track conditions? I see Rolfo finished quite high up in race 2 as well. I hope its gives him the confidence to starting moving up.

He didn't slow down. When he came out of the tight hairpin he accelerated on to the backstretch, than all of a sudden pulled of the helmet throwing it into the grass (while doing around 70mph). Unfortunately I wasn't close enough to catch it.
